kickstart is as tight as it's goin get on the shaft .... but I've got an inch or so lateral movement at the top end of the kickstart .... it's going to damage the paint. So.... will i get away with some plumbers tape on the shaft just to bulk it out slightly or will I need to grind the gap on the lever....?
or any other ideas...

You could try the tape but think youll find when you push the lever onto the shaft, it'll push the tape back also and dunno how long it will last. As for grinding the lever, probably work and keep it taut but I can see that shiny chrome splitting & peeling awe ower the shop. Might need a new kickstart
I'm sure Paul will have a solution for you when he logs on

Id grind the kickstart to make the gap slightly larger, just do it a little at a time. id also look out for an original one.
