how much "ticking" is acceptable from the rear hub .... took it off and when I turn the shaft it's making the noise ... I assume bearings ?

None
It should be quiet when turning it.
Check it`s not just somit stuck in the seal

make sure the rim's no slipping ie rim fits up to shoulder of hub. had this last year after our highland toure. as the wheel was turning the rim would slip under the wieght & knock against shoulder on hub ended up cutting halfe way thru the studs

Chaincase side I'm afraid maxwell....you'll need to take the clutch out. It may well be your end plate bolts have slackened off. Either way you need to get the box out to replace the rear bearing. Tools required clutch compressor / holding tool, bearing drift. Mash to melt the Cnut oot. All available at cropcircle tool hire.

so putting it all back together and I decide to replace the rear tyre. the fuckin rear hub studs must be made of cheese cos 3 of them just snap off so new studs required, except I cannot get 2 of them out ( tried spanners and VICE ) they're not shifting. ..... Advice please on anywhere I can get them removed . noticed that the holes on the rims have elongated slightly in the past where they've worked lose.... so they're fucked anaw, so it's a set of tubeless for me

Chris -- I used a ground down socket - just file the bottom 2-3mm of the socket so it sits flat on the hub -- I used some heat as well on the hub -- screwed the paint a bit but because its the engine side you couldn't see it - G
