try a we bitof wd40 and sand paper, swirl it around as you sand it , then see if its removed or get the head milled slighty

Removing any metal will change the squish clearance, and alter the compression ratio. If pitting is minimal, as Norry says, 1200 wet and dry with 2t. But do not remove excess metal, or scratch dished area.
